Documentarian Project Space

The Documentarian Project Space is an initiative based at Dark Gallery CPH dedicated to photographic and lens-based projects that explore real-world subjects through research-led, narrative-driven approaches.

The project space presents powerful and considered works within the broad field of documentary practice. It champions documentary not only as a visual strategy or journalistic mode, but as a flexible conceptual platform—one that embraces a wide range of forms, from photojournalism and reportage to long-form narrative, constructed documentary, and moving image.

The Documentarian Project Space foregrounds the breadth and complexity of documentary photography. It celebrates expansive interpretations of the genre, supporting projects that challenge expectations, engage with reality in nuanced ways, and open space for conversation around truth, authorship, and representation.

In addition to exhibitions, the project space fosters dialogue around contemporary documentary practice through public programming and mentorship—providing artists with a supportive environment to develop their work and reflect on the evolving role of documentary photography today.

The project space gives emphasis to projects that:

  • Depict a real-world topic
  • Are thoroughly researched
  • Present a narrative
  • Are topical
  • Have some social utility
  • Take full advantage of documentary as a conceptual platform
  • Promote engagement with the featured topic/narrative

Documentarian Project Space was founded by Luke Adekoya Campbell in June 2025.
